After Republican senator Lee Bright of District 12 introduced a bill in February 2010 for South Carolina to explore adopting its own currency, two tweeters (@ckk527), one a reporter from a South Carolina newspaper (@CarltonPurvis), coined the phrase BoBucks when referring to the new currency. The term plays off the phrase "ay Bo" a common greeting among the country folk of South Carolina.
