AMBER alerts are used when a child is thought to have been abducted. The alerts are broadcast using the Emergency Alert System and usually contain a description of the child and of the likely abductor. AMBER is officially a backronym for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, but was named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas, in 1996.
