#herp should be a reference to herpetology, but seems to be mis-used most often with #derp after it to indicate "An expression used when a person, or yourself, has done somthing extremely stupid and dopey" - which I find rather ironic. If there is a need to hash that, #herpderp uses two less characters and does not conflict with #herp.
