Celebrated every October 31 this holiday originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, originally to ward off ghosts. In the 8th century Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as All Saints Day, incorporating some of the traditions of Samhain. October 31 then became known as All Hallows Eve, morphing into "Halloween".
