Memorial Day came into being starting as Decoration Day around the time of the Civil War to commemorate soldiers who die in the service fo their country. People used the day to decorate the graves of the fallen and remember their contribution to the reunification of the Union. Observed on the last Monday in May each year it was formally labeled Memorial Day in 1967.
